Year 1’s class page!
Hiya!
Year 1 is such an exciting year as our children make the big leap from the EYFS into the National Curriculum. My aim is to make this transition as happy, exciting, and enjoyable as possible, guiding each child in a nurturing and supportive way. We learn through hands-on, creative, and collaborative activities, and our classroom is a safe, stimulating space where curious minds can explore, ask questions, and sometimes even have a giggle or two along the way!
Here at Kilnurst, we pride ourselves on our family ethos – we care about every child as an individual, celebrating their unique talents and encouraging them to shine. I hope you find this page helpful, and don’t forget to check back for updates and little snapshots of our learning adventures.
I’m always here and happy to help. If you ever have questions, ideas, or just want to chat about your child’s learning, please pop by, send a message, or even drop in for a quick hello – my door is always open!

Transition for September 2026
🌟 Moving into Year 1
Starting Year 1 is an exciting adventure as children move from Reception into the National Curriculum. It’s all about helping them feel confident, curious, and ready to learn, while still having fun along the way! 🎨📚
What children will be doing and learning:
-
Growing independence 🧒✨: Looking after their things, following simple routines, and managing little tasks on their own.
-
Making friends and working together 🤝😊: Sharing, taking turns, and learning to listen to others.
-
Reading, writing, and numbers ✏️🔢: Recognising letters and sounds, beginning to read and write simple sentences, and exploring numbers and patterns.
-
Curiosity and confidence 🧐🌈: Asking questions, trying new things, and enjoying exploring the world around them.
-
Listening and focusing 👂🎯: Following instructions, joining in group activities, and giving tasks their best try.
In Year 1, we nurture, support, and encourage 🌱💖 every child, helping them feel happy, safe, and ready to shine as they grow and learn.
Books we will look at;
Phonics
In Year 1, the children complete the Phonics Check during June.
At Kilnhurst , we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics programme to help children learn to read confidently and fluently. Little Wandle is a systematic, structured approach that teaches children the sounds letters make (phonemes) and how to blend them together to read words. Children start with simple sounds, then progress to reading full words and sentences, all while practicing decoding, spelling, and comprehension. The programme includes fun, engaging activities, songs, and stories to make learning to read enjoyable. With regular practice and support, children develop strong reading skills, confidence, and a love of books.
